Pervasive systems are composed of a large variety of networked smart devices that supposedly enrich the environment they are deployed in: the so-called Internet of Things vision. The access to services provided by a pervasive system should be as natural and "unconscious" as possible. This is the Weiser's vision of ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) he wrote twenty-four years ago, and it is yet to be fully fulfilled, despite almost all the needed technologies already available.

The widespread interest in UbiComp and the results in some of its fields pose a question: why we are not there yet? In a large number of cases, the available interaction modality seems to be more oriented towards showing off technological wonders rather than to the actual usability of the interface.

In this talk, we will try to depict some of the possible reasons why we are not there yet, from three different points of view: interaction media, device integration and applications by reporting on industrial projects in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover, Mitsubishi Electric Research, Crown, AStudio, Informamuse and many others.
